Project Summary

As a response to the constraints of the Hauser & Wirth gallery in Somerset, Kennedy Woods proposed a sunken 'making space' that took the form of a minimally detailed, translucent lightbox, that contrasted with the surrounding farm buildings. Rammed earth was proposed to form the retaining walls for the cut-out space, while the new building envelope was set on posts visually floating half a metre above ground level to allow panoramic views of the gardens from within the space at desk height, but only when seated. The remaining wall and roof space were an uninterrupted expanse of backlit polycarbonate that would bring in diffuse, flat light perfect for both producing and exhibiting artworks.
